Canary Islands, Madeira & the Azores
Get set for seasonal sights, scents and sunshine as you welcome the arrival
of spring and explore a string of stunning islands. Four idyllic Canary Islands
feature, presenting diverse landscapes, tempting beaches and a typically warm
climate, while the call into Madeira will be one to remember. Not only will
you see the ‘garden island’ in spring bloom, but you’ll be part of Fred. Olsen’s
fantastic ‘Four Fred.s in Funchal’ event.
Timanfaya National Park
First up on this special springtime sailing is Leixões,
from where you can tour to Oporto for worldfamous
Port wine cellars and magnificent
architecture. If you do make the short trip, don’t miss
the Baroque style Clérigos Church, fortress-like
cathedral and UNESCO-listed Ribeira District.
The ‘garden island’ of Madeira kicks off five days of
island exploration. Here Balmoral will dock alongside
Braemar, Black Watch and Boudicca to be part of the
very special ‘Four Fred.s in Funchal’ event. A day of
celebration – featuring fantastic live entertainment,
specially prepared menus and more – will be shared
with crews and guests from all four ocean-going
ships in the Fred. Olsen fleet. The chance to visit the
other ships is sure to be a highlight too. Away from
the festivities, you can experience the vibrant colours
and scents of Madeira’s botanical gardens and
sensational views from the Cabo Girão sea cliff.
In the Canaries, four inspiring islands present a
wealth of breathtaking attractions. La Palma, a
UNESCO-listed natural wonderland known locally as
the ‘Pretty Island’, is yours to explore from the capital,
Santa Cruz. San Antonio volcanic park and the
prehistoric laurel forest of Los Tilos are La Palma’s
top highlights. Mount Teide awaits on Tenerife:
Spain’s highest peak can be experienced in all its
majesty on a scenic cable car tour from Santa Cruz
de Tenerife. The mysterious Pyramids of Güimar
and Playa de Las Americas are within reach too.
The third day in the Canaries is a call to Gran Canaria.
Here you could absorb the mix of architecture in Las
Palmas’ charming Vagueta District, or perhaps admire
the island’s impressive pine forests. Elsewhere the
golden sand dunes of Maspalomas are sure to appeal,
especially as warm spring sunshine bathes the island.
Lanzarote’s lunar-like Timanfaya National Park awaits
your exploration during a stop at Arrecife. The Fire
Mountains within the park never fail to impress.
Last of all, La Coruña beckons on the route back
to the UK. This stylish Spanish city is home to
ancient monuments such as the Tower of Hercules,
though if you’re tempted to take a tour to see the
magnificent Santiago de Compostela Cathedral
you won’t be disappointed.
