Fjords | Scandinavia & the Baltic
Get set for a special journey exploring the cultural highlights and exquisite
waterways of Sweden. You’ll encounter a network of fjords, the beauty
of which can only be truly appreciated while cruising, and discover two
captivating cities by day and by night. You can also experience the splendour
of Stockholm’s unique archipelago; call into the Hanseatic city of Visby; and
have the chance to enjoy mesmeric architecture and canal boat tours.
Malmö makes for an invigorating start to your journey.
Infused with a classically Swedish vibe, the city
combines the past with the present; Malmö Castle
and the historic Lilla Torg Square compete with the
mighty Oresund Bridge and the Turning Torso –
Scandinavia’s tallest building – for your attention.
During your day in port you can discover them all.
UNESCO-listed Visby is ripe for exploration too. This
remarkably well-preserved fortified city was once an
important hub of the Hanseatic League. You’ll feel as
though you’ve stepped back in time as you uncover
the medieval ruins, old merchants’ houses and
13th century town walls.
Make sure you’re out on deck for the scenic route
into the vibrant capital of Stockholm. You’ll pass
through the awe-inspiring Stockholm Archipelago,
one of the world’s largest groups of islands. Two days
here afford plenty of time to explore. You could
perhaps delve into iconic Swedish pop culture at
ABBA The Museum; glide peacefully along the city’s
impressive waterways aboard a sightseeing boat; or
bear witness to the changing of the guard at the
Royal Palace within the Old Town, Gamla Stan.
After a relaxing day at sea to recharge the batteries
and some more captivating archipelago cruising,
you’ll reach laidback Gothenburg. Among the
wealth of attractions in and around Sweden’s
second city are Maritiman – the world’s largest
floating ship museum; Götaplatsen Square, the
city’s cultural hub; and the Volvo Museum, where
you’ll find 8,000 square metres of cars, buses,
machines and engines. For something a little more
energetic, enjoy a canal cruise aboard a ‘Paddan’
sightseeing boat or venture further afield and
uncover the charms of Gothenburg’s northern
archipelago. The prohibition of cars here makes
it ideal for a relaxed sightseeing stroll.
Before you complete your journey, Balmoral will
make a very special diversion to navigate a network
of picturesque Swedish fjords, which present a
tapestry of charming villages and sprawling hills
for you to savour. The beauty of these wondrous
waterways can only be truly appreciated during
a cruise. Fortunately, several daylight hours have
been set aside so you can experience the fjords in
all their glory.
