Fjords | Norwegian Fjords
This tempting Norwegian voyage is the chance to enjoy a host of picturesque
treasures in a land of towering sea cliffs, shifting glaciers and some of the
world’s most scenic railway journeys. From the comfort of Boudicca, you can
experience two fjords rated top in National Geographic’s list of Natural World
Heritage sites, marvel at the remarkable Briksdal Glacier, and explore Bergen’s
alluring contrast of the modern and the ancient.
Bergen Briksdal Glacier
Aurlandsfjord

Following a day at sea for you to settle in to life on
board, your first awe-inspiring sight will be the steep
slopes of the Lysefjord. A bridge at the entrance of
the fjord keeps larger ships away, but smaller ship
Boudicca gets you past and into the heart of this
extraordinary landscape.
The impressive Briksdal Glacier – set between roaring
waterfalls and high peaks – is a sight not to be missed
when in the quaint village of Olden, while a journey
on the Loen Skylift, one of the steepest cable cars in
the world, is every bit as unforgettable. Alternatively,
you may choose to simply bask in the green
meadows and colourful summer flowers of this
beautiful fjord village, or capture the beauty of
Lovatnet Lake in the Lodal Valley. It’s here, where the
glacial water reaches the lakes and fjords, the lake
takes on an extraordinary green colour in the
sunshine. Sailing the crystal-clear waters of the
Nordfjord is next on your itinerary. You’ll come across
numerous fishing communities that date back to pre-
Viking times, before heading past Europe’s highest
sea cliff, Hornelen. This impressive formation rises
860 metres out of the water.
The tranquil village of Flåm, nestled on the banks
of the Aurlandsfjord, is your next port of call.
From here a ride on the world-renowned Flåm
Railway, which includes pausing to take in the
beautiful Kjosfossen Waterfall, is thoroughly
recommended. In the narrow waters of Nærøyfjord,
you’ll get the chance to see why it’s rated joint top
in National Geographic’s list of natural heritage sites
worldwide. There are lots of great photos to be
taken and scenery to be savoured, and the twisting
passage through this stunning fjord towards
Gudvangen – a charming fjord village of just
over a hundred inhabitants – is one of the most
dramatic journeys in Europe.
With its UNESCO-listed Bryggen Wharf, vibrant fish
market dating back to the 13th century, and mix of
galleries and museums, the historic city of Bergen
provides one final slice of authentic Norwegian
culture before your relaxing cruise home. During
your day here there’ll be a chance to take the
funicular railway to the top of Mount Fløyen; or
explore the Troldhaugen Museum, where renowned
composer Edvard Grieg once resided.
